This is something I won’t normally do but this comedic slice of life anime is so relatable to the content of this blog I just have to give a recommendation.
Synopsis of Season 1 (New Game!)
“Since childhood, Aoba Suzukaze has loved the Fairies Story game series, particularly the character designs. So when she graduates from high school, it is no surprise that she applies to work at Eagle Jump, the company responsible for making her favorite video game. On her first day, she is excited to learn that she will be working on a new installment to the series: Fairies Story 3—and even more so under Kou Yagami, the lead character designer.
In their department are people who share the same passion for games. There is Yun Iijima, whose specialty is designing monsters; the shy Hifumi Takimoto, who prefers to communicate through instant messaging; Hajime Shinoda, an animation team member with an impressive figurine collection; Rin Tooyama, the orderly art director; Shizuku Hazuki, the game director who brings her cat to work; and Umiko Ahagon, the short-tempered head programmer.
New Game! follows Aoba and the others on their adventure through the ups and downs of game making, from making the perfect character design to fixing all the errors that will inevitably accumulate in the process.”

The last paragraph of the synopsis leads into a Human Resources connection. This anime demonstrates an example of what it might be like to work at game developer, with many exaggerations of course. On several occasions, both seasons of the show highlight various complex problems that employees may go through on a daily basis such as having to stay late to finish work, showing up late, conflicts with co-workers, and so on. This being said, New Game! is a very light hearted bundle of fun that I enjoyed very much. It had me laughing several times and sympathizing for the characters. If you aren’t experienced in watching anime, there are still the usual tropes such as unnecessary lewdness but in comparison to other anime, this one is rather tame. If you are fan of anime, video games, and human resources, I highly recommend New Game! I gave it a 10/10.
The second season of New Game! which is simply titled New Game!! is currently airing and one of the recent episodes encouraged me to make this blog post. In a recent episode, some higher ups at the company ask all of the employees for feedback on the previous year. These feedback sessions also involve performance reviews. HR fans would really enjoy this scene as it really demonstrates what to do and what not to do in a performance review. Let’s just say some reviews are professionally done and others could use some work. I am currently in the process of trying to obtain this clip to feature on the blog as it would make an excellent post. Hopefully I can show you guys how great this show really is.
Till next time,
